From February 27th to March 1st, the European Digital and Media Literacy Week took place in Brussels. Representatives from educational and media organizations across various countries participated in the international conference, offering insights into ongoing and forthcoming initiatives aimed at enhancing population literacy, promoting media education, countering disinformation, and advancing digital literacy.
On November 23-24 2023 at the Europe Regional Division Committee's meeting in Brussels, the members drew up an action plan for the coming two years. The Action Plan consists of four key tasks: Demonstrating the impact of library advocacy initiatives, Cooperation with European library partners, Evaluating the professional development needs of libraries and Democracy and European libraries.
Over 50 colleagues from across Europe came together in Brussels on 21-23 November 2023 to explore tools and share views on how to ensure a strong future for our field on the continent, working hand-in-hand with other library organisations and external partners.
In October a call for candidates for co-opted members of the Europe Regional Division Committee has been announced. We are happy to share that as a result the EURDC welcomed two new members: Dagnija Baltiņa from Latvia, Director of the Special Collections Department at the National Library of Latvia and Kateryna Aleksieienko from Ukraine, Partnership Coordinator at the "Library Country" Charitable Foundation.

From 23 April 2024, Strasbourg will hold the title of World Book Capital City, as announced today by UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay. IFLA congratulates all those involved in the successful bid, and looks forward to a great mandate that provides inspiration and models for cities and libraries globally.

The European Cultural Foundation has just launched an open call for the Europe Challenge 2022, after finishing the pilot edition with a small group of libraries, who went through a year-long programme and helped to co-design the scheme, along with the partners Demsoc, Public Libraries 2030 and OBA (Amsterdam Public libraries). IFLA participated actively in the Regional Forum for Sustainable Development for Europe, which included a strong emphasis on promoting resilience and ensuring a strong and inclusive future. Maia Simonishvili, member of the Europe Regional Division Committee, participated, using the opportunity to place libraries on the agenda, gather insights, and build connections.
