#10 Urban Roles of Public Buildings and Spaces – The Public Library as the Community Space

Public buildings play several significant roles in a city. Primarily, they host activities and programs that serve citizens daily, fulfilling their needs and facilitating the exercise of their civic rights and responsibilities. They also serve as central venues for social life, shaping and defining urban events, making each city unique and irreplaceable. Key public buildings also play a special role in defining the physical structure and visual image of the city. They are typically architecturally emphasized and situated in selected locations, where they not only contribute to the characteristic urban scenery but also symbolically communicate the importance of shared social content for the functioning and development of the community.
#9 MACK Framework: Developing Local Library Practice for Effective Climate Action

Due to the global and interconnected nature of anthropogenic climate change, conceptualizing what meaningful climate action might look like within your own institution can often be overwhelming. In this workshop we will introduce a tool, the Mitigation-Adaptation-Community-Knowledge (MACK) conceptual model, for situating climate action within local library contexts. Alongside a guiding case study, we will illustrate how this model can be applied by library decision makers to clarify and analyse their institution’s unique capacities for climate action amidst their community’s specific needs.
#8 Sustainability in Libraries: Buildings, Operations and Partnerships with Users

Can libraries afford to wait for others to fix the world while toxic waste, climate change and pollution harm our environment? How much of a difference can we make anyway? This webinar will aim to raise ambitions for greener library buildings, provide examples of how library services can lead by example as sustainably managed organisations and highlight the opportunities to work in partnership with users to work together and move towards a smarter, sustainable world. The presentation will draw on examples from Europe and Hong Kong to illustrate good practice in academic libraries, covering library building design, communication with users and applications of management information to improve sustainability. Spoiler alert – whilst this webinar may not have all the answers to the questions above, the conclusions will suggest there is hope.
#7 Șirna Public Library from Romania — an Empowered Green Library

The inspiring story of the small rural library of Șirna, Romania and its path towards a more sustainable development of its community started in 2014 with the IFLA ENSULIB recognition of the library’s initial efforts. Using the example from Șirna, this webinar will walk you through the process of empowering small libraries to connect to global conversations, join international networks of Green Libraries, learn together with their communities to create new opportunities for growth and development, and get support from available regional funding. Examples of activities that will be illustrated have been inspired from participants in IFLA Green libraries network, by job shadowing and sessions at the National and University Library in Zagreb, by observing the Diechman Bjørvika Library in Oslo and supported through an Erasmus+ European Program.
#6 Tools for Evidence-Based Storytelling: Reflective Practice and the UN Sustainable Development Goals in Libraries

This presentation explores how reflective practice can be used to share the impact of Library services using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework. Emilia and Carmel share examples of the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) Library’s approach to reflection as a key part of evidence-based practice. This includes using storytelling that engages staff and students in reflecting on contributions to a more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable future, highlighting the impact that libraries can have in their local communities within a global framework.

#4 Inner Development Goals: An Interactive Webinar

Many of us are familiar with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This interactive webinar will introduce you to the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) as a critical complement to the SDGs. This research-based framework aims to develop our inner capacity to manage the increasingly complex environment and challenges. After learning about the five frames (below), we will form into breakout groups to explore the skills and qualities supported by the IDGs (e.g. self awareness, sense-making, humility, communication, courage).
